ICAI Seeks Extension of Tax Audit Report Deadline

New Delhi (Patrika English News): The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has written to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman requesting an extension of the deadline for filing tax audit reports for FY 2024–25 (AY 2025–26).

ICAI tax audit report

At present, the deadline for tax audit report submissions is 30 September 2025, while the due date for filing income tax returns (ITRs) has already been extended to 15 September 2025. However, the Central India Regional Council (CIRC) of ICAI has argued that the extension of ITR deadlines does not adequately resolve the challenges faced by taxpayers and professionals.

ICAI’s Request

In its representation, the CIRC has proposed a new deadline of 31 December 2025, citing operational difficulties and technical glitches on the e-filing portal that have delayed timely submissions. The council noted that the staggered release of ITR forms provided some relief, but persistent portal issues continue to hamper efficiency.

Compliance Burden

The period between July and October is particularly demanding, with taxpayers required to manage GST filings, company law compliances, and audit processes simultaneously. According to ICAI, this overlap makes it difficult to complete tax audits within the current timeline.

CIRC chairman Ankur Kumar Gupta and secretary Jayendra Kumar Tiwary, in their letter to the finance minister, highlighted the extensive nature of tax audits and the need for more time to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Broader Impact

If approved, the extension would ease administrative pressure on taxpayers, assist professionals in delivering quality audit reports, and improve overall compliance levels.

Separate Development

In another decision, ICAI has also postponed the CA examinations scheduled on 9–10 September in Kathmandu, following protests in Nepal after the government’s recent ban on several social media platforms.
