Mumbai, March 20: Director Sujoy Ghosh has received significant relief from the Supreme Court regarding the ongoing copyright infringement case linked to his 2016 film ‘Kahaani 2’. The Supreme Court has decided to dismiss the proceedings related to this case.
Ghosh was accused of stealing the story for ‘Kahaani 2’. The initial hearing took place in the Jharkhand High Court, but Ghosh appealed to the Supreme Court to challenge the decision. In July 2025, the Supreme Court had already granted him relief by exempting him from appearing in the Jharkhand Court and issued a notice seeking his response.
The copyright infringement case concerning ‘Kahaani 2’ dates back to 2018, when writer Umesh Mehta alleged that Ghosh used his story without permission. Mehta claimed that he had narrated the story titled ‘Sabak’ to the director in 2015.
Following this, the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Hazaribagh issued a summons against Ghosh, prompting him to approach the Jharkhand High Court, which dismissed his petition. Ghosh then appealed to the Supreme Court against the High Court’s decision. He also sought to have the proceedings dismissed in the Jharkhand High Court, but the court denied this, stating that there was a prima facie case of copyright infringement. Consequently, Ghosh turned to the Supreme Court.
Now, the Supreme Court has decided to cancel the proceedings against the director.
It is noteworthy that ‘Kahaani 2’ was a box office success, with a budget of approximately ₹25 crore and global earnings of ₹45 crore. Vidya Balan’s performance in the film received widespread acclaim, as she portrayed a mother who single-handedly unravels the mystery behind her daughter’s kidnapping. The first part of ‘Kahaani’ was also well-received, with Balan carrying the film on her shoulders.
