Workers Return to Gulf Despite High Costs and Uncertainty

Udaipur, April 13: Thousands of workers from the Wagad region are facing a significant challenge between Employment and expenses. Despite the ongoing tensions in Gulf countries and the lack of direct flights, many workers are returning to their jobs, willing to pay high fares. They express that “the war there is not more terrifying than the struggle for life here.”
Over 15,000 individuals from the region are currently employed in Gulf nations. More than 300 workers returned home before the Iran-Israel conflict but now face a heavy financial burden to return. Previously, travel costs ranged from ₹15,000 to ₹20,000, but now they have skyrocketed to between ₹1.5 lakh and ₹2 lakh.
Ramesh Katara from Dungarpur shares, “Earlier, we could reach Dubai via direct flights, but now we have to travel through 2-3 countries. The ticket prices have increased so much that we have to borrow money to go.” Ismail Khan from Banswara adds, “There are no jobs in the village. I have family responsibilities, so I must go back, even if it means taking on debt.”
Another worker, Hemant Damor, states, “We know the situation there is not normal, but it is better to take risks and work than to sit idle here. How will we manage our children’s education and household expenses?”
Local residents note that due to limited employment opportunities in the Wagad region, the youth’s dependence on Gulf countries is increasing. “If local job opportunities were available, no one would take such risks and spend so much to go abroad,” said a villager.
Experts suggest that the current situation is a result of international conditions and changes in flight availability. Nevertheless, the determination of these workers is evident—they are prepared to secure livelihoods for their families, even if it means paying ten times more.
