Ajit Agarkar Seeks Extension as Chief Selector Until 2027 World Cup

New Delhi, March 19: Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of the Indian cricket team, has formally requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to extend his tenure until the 2027 ODI World Cup. This request comes on the heels of India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup 2026.

According to reports, Agarkar has reached out to the BCCI to discuss the possibility of continuing in his role as chief selector through the next World Cup. The board is currently deliberating on his request.

While there are discussions about a former Indian cricketer potentially taking over Agarkar’s position, no decision has been made by the board at this time. Agarkar was appointed as the head of the selection committee in June 2023, with his term initially set to last until June 2026.

Under Agarkar’s leadership, the Indian team has seen significant success, winning two T20 World Cups and a Champions Trophy, along with the Asia Cup titles in 2023 and 2025. However, the team’s performance in Test cricket has been disappointing, failing to qualify for the final of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and suffering clean sweeps in home series against New Zealand and South Africa. The uncertainty surrounding the future of key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin in Test cricket has been attributed to the selection committee’s decisions.

The BCCI’s decision on whether to extend Agarkar’s tenure based on the team’s performance in limited-overs cricket will be clarified in the coming days.
