Washington, April 1: Amid ongoing tensions with Iran, the United States has intensified its Counter-terrorism efforts. The Pentagon recently announced that elements associated with Al-Qaeda operating within Iran are now on the American target list.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated during a press conference at the Pentagon that despite military operations against Iran, the focus on counter-terrorism remains strong.
“Al-Qaeda is still our enemy, and many individuals in Iran are included on our target list,” he said. Hegseth emphasized that anyone affiliated with the organization and operating from Iranian territory would be considered a legitimate target. If they are providing sanctuary to Al-Qaeda, they will certainly be included in that list.
These comments came in response to questions regarding the possibility of Al-Qaeda leadership being active within Iran. Hegseth highlighted the broad scope of American targets, indicating that counter-terrorism priorities remain a key part of military planning.
The Pentagon stated that such assessments are part of a comprehensive strategy to track and neutralize threats that could impact American forces and regional stability.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Dan Keen indicated that pressure on Iran’s military structure continues, potentially limiting the activities of militant groups.
“We are continuing precise strikes against major manufacturing centers, storage sites for parts, and research facilities,” he noted.
Officials clarified that all operations are conducted under established procedures. Keen added, “We have multiple processes and systems in place to carefully consider everything from risks to civilians to legal aspects… and we always target legitimate threats.”
These statements suggest that the conflict may extend beyond traditional military objectives to actions against non-state actors active within Iranian territory.
