Chennai, March 15: Political rhetoric surrounding women’s safety in Tamil Nadu has intensified, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) targeting the DMK government. On Sunday, BJP spokesperson C.R. Kesavan described the state government as “incompetent, insensitive, and irresponsible.”
Kesavan expressed disappointment over the government’s handling of increasing incidents of violence against women in the state amid the election atmosphere. Drawing a parallel to the Roman Emperor Nero, he stated that while Tamil Nadu faces violent attacks and sexual assaults on women, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who also serves as the state’s Home Minister, is preoccupied with creating reels.
He emphasized that the DMK government has completely failed to ensure the safety of women in Tamil Nadu, saying, “The government has utterly failed to fulfill its responsibilities. Women in the state do not feel safe. The sexual assaults on women have shaken the conscience of the entire nation. The situation in Tamil Nadu has become extremely alarming.”
Kesavan also criticized opposition parties, noting their silence on the issue. He questioned why leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who often speak out on women’s issues in other countries, have not addressed the situation in Tamil Nadu. He labeled this as “hypocrisy in politics.”
He referenced a recent tragic incident in the Kulathur area of Thoothukudi district, where the body of a 17-year-old student was found. Reports suggest that timely police action following the girl’s disappearance could have potentially saved her life.
Furthermore, he mentioned that when MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and other DMK leaders visited the area, they faced anger from local residents, who expressed their discontent through protests.
As assembly elections approach, Kesavan asserted that the people of Tamil Nadu will soon show the DMK government the way out of power.
