JOHNSTON (Patrika English News): After managing just two wins last season, the Johnston Panthers already look poised for more in 2025. Behind the poise of freshman quarterback Ethan Archambeault, Johnston rolled to a convincing 34-8 victory over North Providence on Thursday night in the season opener.

Archambeault’s Confident Debut
Despite nerves before kickoff, Archambeault wasted no time making an impact. His first varsity snap turned into a 28-yard completion, setting the tone for a strong debut. By halftime, he had thrown three touchdown passes — including a perfectly placed fade to senior receiver Yadier Grullon — and showed remarkable composure for a first-year starter.
“Getting my first high school start, I was pretty nervous,” Archambeault admitted. “After the first couple of plays, the nerves came out and I found my feet in the high school football world.”
Senior lineman Nate Della Morte praised the newcomer: “It’s insane how good he is. I’m happy for him — he threw three touchdowns and played the way he did.”
Winning Up Front
Johnston’s offensive and defensive lines dominated the trenches despite North Providence’s experience advantage. Anchored by Della Morte and fellow senior Nick Testa, the Panthers controlled the line of scrimmage and stifled the Cougars after their lone first-quarter touchdown.
“We’ve been looking forward to this game all summer, all winter,” Della Morte said. “It feels amazing to come out and dominate.”
Skill Players Shine
Archambeault wasn’t short on weapons. Lyalo Harrison-Perez proved dangerous on shovel passes and intermediate routes, while Grullon stretched the field as a deep threat. Running back Mike Messina added physicality and versatility, scoring in the third quarter to extend Johnston’s lead.
North Providence’s Wake-Up Call
The Cougars showed early promise with a 10-play, 77-yard scoring drive capped by a Kaiden Wray touchdown. But frustration mounted as Johnston’s defense clamped down, limiting them to just two first downs the rest of the half.
“We have to stay together,” senior captain Jayden Allard said. “We started pointing fingers, and that can’t happen. This is a wake-up call.”
Setting the Tone for 2025
For Johnston, the opening-night win brought joy to players and fans alike, with students storming the field afterward in celebration. Still, both veterans and newcomers stressed the importance of staying grounded.
“It’s a long season,” Archambeault said. “We’re back to work, game by game. The Johnston Panthers are going to be ready.”
Next up: Johnston travels to face Coventry in Week 2, aiming to build on a promising start.
