Bengaluru, March 28: The 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) has commenced, with the opening match taking place at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). RCB won the toss and opted to bowl first.
Before the first ball was bowled, a poignant moment unfolded on the field, highlighting the spirit of humanity alongside the sport. A minute of silence was observed in memory of the 11 fans who tragically lost their lives during a stampede last season. Players from both teams, along with support staff and spectators, stood in solemn silence, paying their respects. The players wore black armbands as a tribute to the fans.
This moment underscored the vital role that fans play in cricket. RCB had won the IPL 2025 title and had organized a celebration at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, 2025. Unfortunately, an unexpectedly large crowd led to a stampede, resulting in the deaths of 11 RCB fans.
In honor of these fans, RCB announced a cash donation and decided to keep 11 seats vacant at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during IPL 2026 as a mark of remembrance. RCB, having secured their first IPL title in the previous season, is seen by fans as a stronger team this year, with hopes of defending their championship.
