Iraq Ends 40-Year Drought, Qualifies for FIFA World Cup 2026

Monterrey, April 1: Iraq has ended its 40-year wait for FIFA World Cup qualification by defeating Bolivia 2-1 in a thrilling match held at the Monterrey Stadium. This victory marks Iraq’s return to the World Cup, having last participated in 1986.

Iraq took an early lead in the 10th minute when striker Amir Al Amari assisted Al Hamadi, who scored with a header, leaving the Bolivian goalkeeper helpless. However, Bolivia responded fiercely, equalizing in the 38th minute with a powerful shot from Moises Paniagua after breaking through the defense.

In the second half, Iraq regained the lead in the 53rd minute when Hussein converted a low volley from Marco Farji’s cross, putting Iraq ahead once more. Despite Bolivia’s late attempts to equalize, Iraq held firm in defense, securing their spot in the World Cup.

Iraq has been placed in a challenging Group ‘1’ for the tournament, where they will face 2022 World Cup runners-up France, Senegal, and Norway.

Iraq’s head coach, Graham Arnold, expressed gratitude towards his players, stating, “Their dedication and true Iraqi spirit of fighting and putting everything on the line helped us win this match.”

Conversely, Bolivia’s head coach, Oscar Villegas, lamented the loss, saying, “It is very difficult. We wanted to be part of this World Cup and worked hard for it. I am proud of my players for their courage and how they fought until the end. I truly regret not fulfilling the hopes of my country and people.”
