Promoting Sports Beyond Cricket Essential, Says Defence Khadse

New Delhi, March 14: The Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Defence Khadse, emphasized the importance of giving due recognition to sports other than cricket and strengthening grassroots talent. Speaking at the inaugural session of a four-day conference hosted by the Delhi SPORTS Journalists Association (DSJA), Khadse highlighted the transformative power of Sports journalism.

In a post on her social media account, Khadse stated, “Sports journalism is the voice that transforms sports into stories, athletes into icons, and sports into a source of national pride. I had the privilege of addressing the SJFI Convention 2026, a historic gathering in the sports media world held after 23 years.” She was joined by Hari Ranjan Rao, Secretary (Sports), and Sarju Chakraborty, Director General of the Sports Authority of India, along with Ramesh V, Secretary of the Sports Journalists Federation of India.

During her address, Khadse stressed the need to highlight government initiatives, promote sports tourism, and open career paths in emerging fields such as sports science. She also pointed out that journalism, as the fourth pillar of democracy, is essential for advancing social welfare, and that sports media plays a crucial role in showcasing India’s ‘soft power’ on a global scale. Gender disparity in sports journalism was another significant issue she raised, advocating for greater participation of women in the field. She expressed heartfelt appreciation for the unwavering support of sports journalists, whose dedication strengthens the entire sports ecosystem.

The event commenced traditionally with the lighting of a lamp, followed by the honoring of distinguished guests and collaborators. DSJA President Abhishek Tripathi presented an award to Defence Khadse, while DSJA Secretary Sabi Hussain honored Hari Ranjan Rao. Khadse also recognized the leadership of the SJFI and state presidents and secretaries of affiliated sports journalist associations from across the country.

The draw for the JK Bose Inter-Zonal T20 Cricket Tournament was also conducted, setting up two matches: South vs East and West vs North.
