Ryder Cup Snub Helped Fuel Scottie Scheffler’s Rise to World No. 1

NAPA, Calif. (Patrika English News): Four years ago, Scottie Scheffler wasn’t the world’s top-ranked golfer — he was simply hoping to earn a captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup. Today, he stands as the No. 1 player in golf, with six wins this year alone, including two majors.

Scheffler still recalls the uncertainty of 2021, when captain Steve Stricker called him with the final spot. “I think it was fairly obvious I was probably the last guy on the team,” Scheffler admitted. That call proved to be a turning point.

At Whistling Straits, Scheffler rewarded Stricker’s faith, beating then world No. 1 Jon Rahm in singles after starting with four straight birdies. The U.S. went on to win 19-9, its biggest margin ever over Europe. To this day, Scheffler carries the yardage book cover from that Ryder Cup as a reminder of how it boosted his confidence.

Stricker later said the choice had come down to Scheffler, Sam Burns, and Patrick Reed, but the scales tilted toward the young Texan. “Taking down Jon Rahm on Sunday … I’ve got to believe all that played a part in what he’s doing now,” Stricker said.

Scheffler’s trajectory since then has been historic. He has matched records of golf greats like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Sam Snead with back-to-back seasons of six or more victories. He also became the fastest player to win 19 PGA Tour titles, reaching the milestone in just three years, seven months, and one day.

Not every Ryder Cup memory is positive. At Marco Simone in 2023, Scheffler suffered a crushing defeat in foursomes and later let a singles lead against Rahm slip away. He left in tears, but that setback only pushed him harder. The following year, he won nine times, including a Masters and Olympic gold.

Now, as Scheffler prepares for Bethpage Black, he is focused on readiness. “The last Ryder Cup did not go how I anticipated it would go,” he said. “I was fired up to get home and practice, and my results since then show the work I put in. We’ve got three days to see who’s the better team, and it’s going to be a good battle.”

For Scheffler, Ryder Cup highs and lows have shaped a career that now invites comparisons with Woods — though he will hope to avoid repeating Woods’ Ryder Cup struggles, with just one win in eight appearances.
