Team Trust Key to T20 World Cup Victory: Surya Kumar Yadav

New Delhi, March 15: Surya Kumar Yadav, who led India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026, emphasized that the foundation of their recent title win was built on a strategic approach of minimal changes in team selection and unwavering trust in a core group of players.

During a panel discussion at the BCCI Awards ceremony held in New Delhi, Surya Kumar shared insights into the thought process that guided the team’s careful management over the past two years. He stated, “It wasn’t that difficult. I believe since we started under Rahul Sir’s leadership in 2024, we knew we needed to show a lot of trust and faith in our players. Sometimes in SPORTS, things may not always look good around you. There are many ups and downs, but you need to show immense faith in your players. When we began the new cycle for the T20 World Cup 2026, that was our goal. Until the T20 World Cup, we aimed to make minimal changes.”

He added, “When you enter a major tournament like this, it’s crucial to stand by those players who have performed well for you over the last two years. We always knew we had built a super team. As Gautam Bhai always says, we have selected a super team, so let’s stick with them.”

In the T20 World Cup 2026, the Indian batting order faced a collapse against the USA, but Surya Kumar played a remarkable innings of 84 runs to rescue the team from a precarious situation.

The captain remarked, “You are absolutely right that we were the biggest contenders for the title entering the tournament. However, when you know you are playing in your own country, in front of your home crowd, there is excitement, but also immense pressure. We were quite nervous, and you must have seen that in our first match against the USA. The pressure was very high. When you play at home, the pressure is even greater.”

Surya Kumar reflected philosophically on how quickly the momentum of a T20 match can shift. “I mean, even 10-15 minutes can be a long time. The change you are talking about can happen in just one over. But we tried to play our best cricket, put in our full effort, and keep things as simple as possible. I think the boys did just that for me.”

With cricket set to feature in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, Surya Kumar did not hide his ambitions to add an Olympic gold to his growing collection of ICC trophies. He stated, “It’s great that a big event is happening, and cricket is getting entry into it. Of course, it will be special. There are two events that year: the T20 World Cup and the Olympics. So why not? If you can win two in a row, why not three in T20, and definitely an Olympic gold as well?”
