Gujarat Passes Uniform Civil Code Bill, Amit Shah Expresses Support

New Delhi, March 25: In a significant move, the Gujarat Assembly has passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, following Uttarakhand’s lead. Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his satisfaction, stating that the aim is for the country to operate under a uniform law for all citizens, which is both a priority and a commitment for the government.

In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Shah emphasized, “Having a uniform law for every citizen has been the BJP’s pledge since its inception. Under Modi Ji’s leadership, BJP-ruled state governments are consistently progressing in this direction.”

Shah further congratulated Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and all legislators who supported the bill, calling the passage of the UCC Bill a historic achievement that reflects the state’s commitment. He reiterated that the country should not operate on the basis of appeasement but should uphold equal laws for all citizens.

The Gujarat Assembly passed the UCC Bill after a debate lasting over seven hours on Tuesday. With this, Gujarat becomes the second state in the country to adopt the UCC, following Uttarakhand, which was the first to pass the bill in February 2024.

The ‘Gujarat Uniform Civil Code, 2026’ will be implemented across the state. However, the bill specifies that the code will not apply to members of Scheduled Tribes (ST) and certain groups whose traditional rights are protected under the Constitution.
