India Begins T20 World Cup with Thrilling Victory Over USA

New Delhi, February 8: India kicked off its ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign with a hard-fought victory, defeating the USA by 29 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday. Despite the win, the match was not without its challenges, as the Indian team faced a tough situation at one point. Captain Suryakumar Yadav played a stellar innings, remaining unbeaten on 84 runs, while Mohammad Siraj made a significant impact with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 29 runs.

The pressure was on India even before the match began, with all-rounder Harshit Rana ruled out due to injury and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah unable to play because of illness. Batting first on a pitch that offered movement and grip, India found themselves in a precarious position at 77 runs for 6 wickets. USA’s Shadley Van Shalkwyk bowled effectively, putting India in a challenging spot.

However, Suryakumar Yadav stepped up to the occasion, leading from the front in his first T20 World Cup match as captain. He played shots all around the ground, scoring 84 runs off 49 balls, including 10 fours and 4 sixes. Partnering with Axar Patel, he helped stabilize the innings, guiding India to a respectable total of 161/9.

In the bowling department, Mohammad Siraj provided early breakthroughs, taking two wickets, supported well by Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel, who also claimed two wickets each. The USA team struggled early on, losing three wickets for just 13 runs. However, Sanjay Krishnamurthy and Milind Kumar managed to add some excitement to the match with a partnership of 58 runs.

Krishnamurthy (37 runs) and Shubham Ranjan (37 runs) showed resilience, but India’s experienced bowlers regained control towards the end. In the final overs, Siraj and Arshdeep took crucial wickets, restricting the USA to 132/9, thus securing a hard-earned victory for India.

– Abhishek Sharma failed to score, marking his fourth career duck, with this being his third golden duck in the last five matches.
– Suryakumar Yadav became the fourth Indian player to score over 1000 runs as a T20 international captain, joining the ranks of Rohit Sharma (1905), Virat Kohli (1570), and MS Dhoni (1112). This was Yadav’s highest score as captain, surpassing his previous best of 68 runs against South Africa in Perth in 2022.

– Suryakumar Yadav now holds the record for the most ‘Man of the Match’ awards (17) by an Indian in T20 internationals, surpassing his previous tie with Virat Kohli, who has 16 awards.
