Preetika Barman Shines as India Defeats Myanmar 2-0

Yangon, March 13: The Indian U-17 women’s football team secured a convincing 2-0 victory against Myanmar in a friendly match held at Thuwunna Stadium on March 12. Both goals were scored by Preetika Barman, showcasing her exceptional talent on the field.

This match is part of India‘s preparations for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup, scheduled to take place in Suzhou, China, from May 1 to May 17. Myanmar, having already qualified for the continental tournament, is using these matches to enhance their readiness.

India displayed a balanced performance, scoring one goal in each half. Goalkeeper Munni made crucial saves when needed, while the defense, led by Abhista Basnet and Elizabeth Lakra, remained organized and composed throughout the match.

The Young Tigresses started the game strongly, attempting to apply pressure with controlled possession and calculated attacks. Although Myanmar showed aggression in the first half, trying to disrupt India’s rhythm, the Indian team gradually took control of the match.

In the 31st minute, Indian captain Julan Nongmaithem provided a pass to Alisha Lingdoh from the left flank. Lingdoh delivered a teasing cross into the box, but Pearl Fernandes could not direct her header on target.

India opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a well-executed move. After winning possession near the center circle, Redima Devi Chingkhama fed a precise through ball to Preetika Barman. The winger displayed patience, deceiving Myanmar’s goalkeeper Saung Pwint Phyu and slotting the ball into an empty net just before halftime, giving India a 1-0 lead.

While Myanmar showed some promise in the first half, India took complete control in the second half. Coach Pamela Kanti’s team increased their pace and began to dominate possession, pushing Myanmar deeper into their own half.

Just four minutes into the second half, India doubled their lead. Alva Devi Senjam sprinted down the left wing and sent a brilliant cross into the penalty area. The delivery broke through Myanmar’s defense, allowing Preetika Barman to score her second goal of the match.

This goal shifted the momentum firmly in India’s favor. The team continued to control the game, and in the 60th minute, Abhista attempted a free-kick from over 30 yards, which struck the crossbar. Despite missing that opportunity, India maintained their grip on the match. Their disciplined defending and effective ball movement kept Myanmar at bay, allowing the visitors to comfortably secure the win.
