Kathmandu, Sept 10 (Patrika English News): Nepal has been gripped by unrest following the government’s decision to ban 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. As protests spread across the country, the Nepal Army announced on Wednesday that a nationwide curfew will come into effect from Thursday morning.
According to a report in The Himalayan Post, the army’s Directorate of Public Relations and Information issued a statement confirming the move. The army said prohibitory orders had already been imposed on Wednesday until 5:00 pm, and from 6:00 am on Thursday, a full curfew will be enforced across Nepal.
Army Cites Violence and Vandalism
The statement noted that protests in recent days had led to incidents of arson, looting, vandalism of public and private property, unlawful entry, and targeted violent attacks. The army warned that “any such criminal act in the name of protest is punishable” and pledged strict action against offenders.
The army also expressed gratitude to citizens for their cooperation so far and conveyed regret over the loss of life and property during the unrest.
Exemptions and Public Advisory
During the curfew, essential services will be allowed, including ambulances, fire services, hearses, health workers, and security personnel vehicles.
Citizens have been advised to coordinate with nearby security personnel if necessary. The army also appealed to retired soldiers, government employees, journalists, and the general public not to trust misinformation and rely only on official updates.
The unrest, which began in Kathmandu on September 10, continues to intensify, putting Nepal’s law and order situation under severe strain.
